Opposition Coalition Denies Endorsing ADC Ahead of 2027 Nigerian Election

Date:

A coalition of opposition figures led by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has denied reports that it has adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its political platform ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general election.

The group, which includes disaffected members of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and other opposition leaders, also dismissed claims that Salihu Lukman, a former APC Vice Chairman (North-West), had been appointed as the head of its secretariat.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday, Mr Lukman—currently serving as the coalition’s interim spokesperson—described the reports as “completely false.”

“No such decision has been taken,” he said. “Also false is the report that the coalition has adopted the ADC at its meeting of Tuesday, 20 May 2025.”

Mr Lukman clarified that while discussions among coalition members were ongoing, no final decision had been made regarding the political party they would support in 2027.

“Negotiations are progressing well,” he said. “Unfortunately, there appear to be mischief makers promoting and planting stories in the media with the clear aim of sowing seeds of discord among coalition leaders.”

He urged the public and media to disregard what he described as “mischievous stories,” reiterating that the coalition remained united in its objective of forming a credible alternative to President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
