As part of efforts to plug revenue leakages and boost sustainable service delivery in the water sector, the Kwara State Water Corporation has commenced an aggressive compliance and enforcement campaign across the state.
The exercise, which began over the weekend in selected communities within Ilorin Metropolis, is being carried out by a multi-agency task force comprising personnel from the Water Corporation, the Ministry of Water Resources, and the Kwara State Internal Revenue Service (KW-IRS).
Speaking during the operation, Mr. Gana Makun, Acting General Manager of the Water Corporation, appealed to residents—especially defaulters—to pay their water rates promptly in support of government investment in water infrastructure.
“We urge all water consumers to comply with payment obligations. Defaulters will face disconnection, while illegal connections will now attract legal consequences,” Makun stated.
He emphasized that Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s administration has invested significantly in upgrading water infrastructure across the state and called on residents to reciprocate by taking ownership of the facilities and safeguarding them against vandalism and abuse.
The task force visited Baba Ode Community, where officials assessed water usage in residential homes, farms, and water-producing factories. During the operation, several leaking pipes were repaired, illegal connections disconnected, and non-compliant users sanctioned.
Makun urged citizens to report illegal connections, pipe bursts, and leaks promptly to the Ministry of Water Resources or the Water Corporation headquarters in Ilorin.
“Protecting public water infrastructure is everyone’s responsibility. Revenue generation is crucial for maintaining these services, and we will continue to enforce compliance rigorously,” he added.
The Kwara State Government has reiterated its commitment to ensuring uninterrupted access to clean, safe, and affordable water. This enforcement campaign is expected to continue across other parts of the state in the coming weeks.
