A 30-year-old man, Sodiq Eniola, was lynched by a mob on Tuesday evening after allegedly killing three young siblings in a brutal machete attack in the Ese Ola area of Oba-Ile, Osun State.
The incident occurred around 8:05 p.m. when Eniola, reportedly battling mental health issues and suspected drug addiction, stormed the home of Ganiyu Bamidele and attacked the sleeping children in their mother’s roadside shop.
Eyewitnesses said Eniola entered the premises in an agitated state and, without saying a word, began hacking the children with a machete. All three victims died on the spot.
“The attack was sudden and senseless,” said Bamidele, the children’s father. “He didn’t speak to anyone. He just started cutting the children before anyone could react.”
Residents quickly intervened, overpowering Eniola and subjecting him to a violent mob assault. Police officers from the Oba-Ile Division arrived shortly afterward and took the suspect to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
The bodies of the children have been deposited at a local morgue as the community mourns the devastating loss.
Confirming the incident, Osun State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abiodun Ojelabi, described the case as “deeply distressing” and said an investigation is underway.
“Preliminary findings suggest the suspect may have been under the influence of drugs, but we are conducting a full investigation to establish the facts,” Ojelabi said.
