Chelsea have been dealt a setback ahead of Friday night’s pre-season friendly against Bayer Leverkusen after confirming that defender Levi Colwill has undergone surgery on an anterior cruciate ligament injury.
The club announced on Thursday that the 22-year-old sustained the injury during training earlier this week, shortly after returning to Cobham for pre-season preparations.
Following medical assessments, surgery was deemed the necessary course of action, with the procedure completed successfully.
Colwill will now begin a rehabilitation programme under the supervision of Chelsea’s medical team at Cobham as he works towards a return to full fitness.
His absence is a blow for manager Enzo Maresca, who had planned to integrate the England international into the squad’s pre-season campaign ahead of the new Premier League season.
