Email-Only Era Begins at UNILORIN VC’s Policy Splits Opinions

Date:

Starting August 15, 2025, all official correspondences from Deans, Heads of Departments, and Directors at the University of Ilorin must be sent directly to the Vice Chancellor’s designated email address, marking a decisive step toward full automation of the institution’s administrative processes.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, announced the policy on Monday, August 4, 2025, during the Orientation Programme for newly appointed and serving academic and administrative leaders, organised by the Centre for Research, Development and In-House Training (CREDIT) at the University Auditorium.

Prof. Egbewole emphasised that none of the new Directors lobbied for their positions, attributing their appointments to merit and proven competence. He urged them to meet performance expectations, maintain continuity by completing inherited projects, and foster teamwork across departments, warning against the isolationist tendencies that have hindered the university’s collective progress.

He also encouraged interdisciplinary research and international collaborations through existing Memoranda of Understanding facilitated by the Centre for International Education, while calling on leaders to leverage UNILORIN’s goodwill to attract external funding.

Other speakers, including CREDIT Director Prof. Abdulkarim Ayopo Oloyede, Registrar Mansur Adeleke Alfanla, former Academic Planning Director Prof. Sulyman Alege Kuranga, University Bursar Abiodun Lawal, Acting MD of Unilorin Holdings Prof. Bashiru Ademola Raji, and COMSIT Director Prof. Rasheed Gbenga Jimoh, addressed themes ranging from ethical leadership and financial transparency to revenue generation, digital transformation, and cybersecurity.

Prof. Jimoh noted that under the current administration, UNILORIN has achieved rapid transcript processing, with some alumni now able to receive their transcripts within 10 minutes of application.

The new email-only memo directive, while aimed at streamlining operations, is already generating mixed reactions among staff, with some welcoming the efficiency and others worried about reduced personal engagement in university governance.
