Date:

A kidnap gang’s escape plan ended in disaster on Monday morning when their getaway vehicle crashed in Angwan Mayo, Kokona Local Government Area of Nasarawa State, shortly after allegedly collecting ransom from victims.

The Nasarawa State Police Command confirmed that the incident occurred near a VIO checkpoint involving an Opel Vectra vehicle with registration number PLATEAU BLD 566 ST.

According to the police, the two suspects inside the car fled immediately after the accident. A vigilant Vehicle Inspection Officer (VIO) on the scene handed over a G3 rifle and cash retrieved from the wreckage before the police operatives arrived.

The vehicle was later towed to a police station, where a detailed search uncovered a massive cache of weapons and cash, including:

  • ₦6,908,150 in cash

  • One AK-47 rifle

  • One Type 06 rifle

  • One G3 rifle

  • Three magazines

  • Fifty-seven rounds of live ammunition

Following a joint police–military manhunt, one suspect, identified as Mohammed Tahir of Barkin Ladi, Plateau State, was arrested after attempting to escape into the forest.

During interrogation, Tahir confessed to being part of a seven-man kidnap gang responsible for the abduction of a lawyer in Nyanya, Abuja, from whom ransom was collected. He further revealed that he and an accomplice were heading to Jos to share the proceeds of the crime before their vehicle crashed.

The police assured the public that efforts are ongoing to apprehend the remaining suspects still at large. The Nasarawa State Police Command also praised the vigilance of the public and reaffirmed its commitment to working with security agencies to eradicate crime in the state.
