The Abia State Police Command has confirmed that it is investigating a traffic officer allegedly caught on video attempting to extort a commercial tricycle rider at Azikiwe Junction, along Aba Road in Umuahia.
The viral clip shows a woman confronting the officer and questioning him about the alleged extortion. Although the officer denied the accusation on camera, the keke rider appeared to confirm the claim and displayed the money he said was meant for the officer.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Maureen Chinaka, said the officer has been identified and the matter is being handled by the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID).
‘The Abia State Police command is aware of a trending video on Facebook showing a traffic officer of the Command alleged t
o have attempted to extort a keke rider. The officer involved has been identified, and investigation into the incident is ongoing at the state CID,” Chinaka stated.
Commissioner of Police Danladi Isa also reacted to the incident, stressing the command’s commitment to discipline and professionalism. He said the police would not condone any conduct capable of undermining public confidence in the force.
He further assured residents that, in line with the Inspector-General of Police’s vision, officers in the state would remain professional, service-driven, and people-friendly while carrying out their duties.
