Soludo Orders Arrest Over Onitsha Market Shooting

Anambra State Governor, Charles Soludo, has ordered the arrest of security operatives involved in a shooting incident near Emeka Offor Plaza, Onitsha Main Market, which left at least one person dead on Tuesday.

The state government confirmed the incident through a statement by Commissioner for Information, Law Mefor, noting that the deceased, identified as Miss Chinwe Igwe, was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital. Several others sustained injuries and are currently receiving medical treatment.

According to Channels TV, Governor Soludo directed that the suspects be apprehended and handed over to the police for prosecution. He also instructed that the medical needs of those injured be promptly addressed.

“We appreciate the swift intervention of the police, who have restored calm and order to the area. An investigation into the incident has commenced, and the government will ensure that all necessary measures are taken to prevent similar occurrences in the future,” Mefor stated.

The statement confirmed that normalcy has since returned to the market, with police patrols and monitoring ongoing to maintain peace.

The shooting involved operatives of the Operation Clean And Healthy Anambra Brigade (OCHA Brigade), a special unit tasked with enforcing environmental and sanitation regulations across the state.

Authorities are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident, including the reasons for the use of live ammunition at the crowded market.

The state government emphasized its commitment to public safety while ensuring accountability for security personnel involved in breaches of law and protocol.
