Kano Censorship Board Bans Islamic Singers’ Debates Without Approval

Date:

The Kano State Censorship Board has imposed an immediate ban on Islamic singers’ debates in the state unless prior approval is obtained, warning that violators will face legal action.

The decision follows an unapproved debate involving Mallam Usman Maidubun Isa and Shehi Mai Tajul’izzi, which the Board described as a breach of its operational guidelines. Both singers have been summoned to appear before a committee investigating the matter.

Executive Secretary of the Board, Alhaji Abba El-Mustapha, announced the ban in a statement issued by the Board’s Information Officer, Abdullahi Sani Sulaiman. He said the move was aimed at safeguarding peace, harmony, and compliance within the entertainment and religious sectors.

“In a move to ensure peace, harmony, and compliance among stakeholders in the entertainment and religious sectors, the Board hereby announces an immediate ban on all Islamic singers’ debates without prior approval,” the statement read.

The Board also set up a fact-finding committee to probe the controversy, chaired by Malam Isha Abdullahi, Director of Special Duties. El-Mustapha directed the two singers and their moderators to appear before the panel within 24 hours.

“Organising such debates without official consent from the Board violates the Kano State Censorship Law and may attract serious legal actions,” the statement added.

El-Mustapha reaffirmed the Board’s mandate to regulate and supervise the activities of Islamic singers and performers in line with state laws.

He also called on residents to support the Board’s efforts. “The public is urged to remain calm and support the Board by providing relevant information that will foster peace, understanding, and cultural development across the state,” he said.
