Police Service Commission Conducts Merit-Based Promotion Exams

Date:

The Police Service Commission (PSC) on Friday continued its compulsory promotion examinations for senior officers, underlining the exercise’s role in enhancing professionalism, credibility, and the public image of the Nigeria Police Force.

Ikechukwu Ani, Head of Press and Public Relations for the PSC, confirmed that 630 Deputy Superintendents of Police sat for promotion to the rank of Superintendent at the Commission’s Parry Osayande Auditorium in Abuja. He described the exams as part of the PSC’s efforts to ensure transparent, merit-based promotions.

Retired Supreme Court Justice Paul Adamu Galumje, representing the Judiciary, formally opened the examinations. He encouraged officers to pursue continuous learning and professional development, emphasizing that self-improvement is essential for career advancement.

DIG Taiwo Lakanu, chairman of the PSC’s Standing Committee on Police Matters, described the exams as “timely and necessary” to restore public trust. He warned officers against attempting to bribe PSC staff, stressing that any such attempt would result in immediate disqualification.

PSC Chairman DIG Hashimu Argungu highlighted that the examinations aim to reinforce credibility and respect for officers attaining new ranks. “The Police of our dream should work independently and deliver results without undue influence,” he said.

The promotion exams and interviews will continue next week for officers in the Commissioner cadre, with a plenary meeting scheduled later this month. The PSC emphasized that these measures form part of a broader initiative to professionalize the force, strengthen accountability, and rebuild public confidence.

Separately, the Nigeria Police Force has disowned a viral social media notice claiming to advertise a recruitment exercise beginning September 22, 2025. Authorities described the document, which listed general requirements and application procedures for various academic qualifications, as fraudulent.
