Residents Advised to Avoid Fake Eye Clinics, Says Abia Govt

Date:

The Abia State government has warned residents, particularly in rural areas, against patronizing quacks posing as legitimate eye care professionals. The government noted that many individuals with eye conditions have fallen victim to these impostors, who exploit their ignorance by recommending harmful substances for treatment.

Dr. Betty Emeka-Obasi, Administrator of the Abia State Eye Health Management Bureau, issued the warning at Government House, Umuahia, while briefing journalists on outcomes of the week’s Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti.

Obasi emphasized that ignorance remains a major factor behind avoidable blindness. She stated, “From the inception of this government and through the outreaches and World Sight Days we have held, we realized that, at the root of avoidable blindness, is ignorance. Those who have been exploited by quacks can come and see the professionals.”

The government also announced plans to hold a symposium in Umuahia on October 9 to commemorate World Sight Day. The event aims to raise awareness about proper eye care practices and educate the public on the dangers of unlicensed practitioners.

Dr. Emeka-Obasi urged citizens to seek care only from certified eye health professionals to prevent further cases of blindness caused by unregulated treatments.
