Nigeria has finalized a major deal with LONGi Green Energy Technology Co. Ltd, the world’s largest solar panel manufacturer, for the establishment of a 1,000-megawatt-capacity solar panel factory in the country.
The Energy Commission of Nigeria (ECN), which facilitated the agreement on behalf of the Federal Government, said the partnership will significantly boost local production of solar equipment and support Nigeria’s transition to renewable energy.
According to a statement from the ECN, the agreement was reached during a follow-up visit by a Federal Government delegation to China, following the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between both parties earlier this year.
The Director-General of the ECN, Dr. Abdullahi Mustapha, described the development as a major milestone in Nigeria’s renewable energy landscape, noting that it aligns with the Federal Government’s efforts to expand local solar manufacturing capacity.“The Energy Commission of Nigeria is currently implementing the Renewed Hope Solarisation Programme aimed at accelerating the deployment of solar mini-grids to public institutions across the country,” Mustapha said.
“The establishment of a solar panel production factory will further enhance the programme’s implementation and create job opportunities for Nigerians.”
The ECN said the new plant would not only meet the growing domestic demand for solar products but also position Nigeria as a hub for renewable energy technology in Africa.
