Arsenal Hold Chelsea in Fiery Draw

Date:

Mikel Merino rescued Arsenal as the Premier League leaders were held to a 1-1 draw by 10-man Chelsea in a fiery London derby on Sunday.

The match turned heated early when Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo was sent off shortly before half-time for a dangerous foul on Merino, upgraded to a red card after VAR intervention.

Despite being a man down, Chelsea took the lead three minutes into the second half when Trevoh Chalobah met Reece James’ corner with a glancing header that found the far corner.

Arsenal, however, responded swiftly. Bukayo Saka weaved past Marc Cucurella before delivering a perfect cross for Merino, who powered home a close-range header in the 59th minute—his fourth goal of the season.

The draw keeps Arsenal five points ahead of second-placed Manchester City and six clear of Chelsea. Both teams came into the match buoyed by midweek Champions League victories, but the derby quickly descended into a bruising battle.

The first half was littered with heavy challenges, with Marc Cucurella, Martin Zubimendi, Riccardo Calafiori and others all involved in rugged exchanges. Chelsea’s 18-year-old prospect Estevao Willian, fresh off his standout performance against Barcelona, missed a promising chance as the hosts pressured Arsenal’s patched-up defence.

Caicedo’s dismissal—Chelsea’s sixth red card of the season—added further tension, and shortly after, Piero Hincapie escaped punishment for an elbow on Chalobah.

Gabriel Martinelli forced a sharp save from Robert Sanchez before the break, while Arsenal keeper David Raya denied Enzo Fernandez during Chelsea’s early spell of control.

Arsenal introduced Martin Odegaard and Noni Madueke to chase a winner, but Chelsea’s defence held firm. Sanchez produced late saves from Saka and Merino to ensure the Blues avoided defeat.

The result preserves Arsenal’s 17-match unbeaten run in all competitions, while Chelsea extend their own streak to seven games without defeat.
