At least five people, including three children, died in a head-on collision on the Lokoja–Ajaokuta Road in Kogi State on Tuesday morning.
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the accident in a statement issued on Wednesday from Lokoja. According to the corps, the crash occurred around 11:40 a.m. at Gidan Bassa community.
The collision involved a Toyota Avensis from Omala Local Government Area and a Sino truck owned by Dangote Cement Plc. The vehicles bore registration numbers Kogi BJK172LG and BBR719SA, respectively.
The FRSC reported that all five fatalities were immediate, including three children (two girls and one boy) and two adults (one man and one woman).
A total of 12 people were involved in the accident. The seven survivors sustained varying injuries, ranging from bruises to fractures and other minor wounds.
The injured were taken to Ekpe Hospital in Ganaja and ASCO Hospital in Ajaokuta for medical treatment.
Preliminary investigations by the FRSC indicated that wrongful overtaking was the likely cause of the crash.
Four hand-held mobile phones recovered from the scene were taken into custody by the FRSC, while the damaged vehicles and other personal belongings were handed over to the Ajaokuta Division of the police.
FRSC officials have urged drivers to observe traffic rules and exercise caution, especially on highways, to prevent similar accidents.
The incident adds to ongoing concerns about road safety in Kogi State, highlighting the need for stricter enforcement and public awareness campaigns.
