Tinubu Approves Hiring of 50 Doctors, 100 Nurses for Correctional Centres

Date:

The Minister of Interior, Dr Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has announced that President Bola Tinubu has approved the employment of 50 medical doctors and 100 nurses for hospitals in the nation’s correctional centres.

Tunji-Ojo made the disclosure on Tuesday in Abuja during a courtesy visit by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris. He said the approval addresses the shortage of medical personnel in some facilities, noting that the hospital at the Rivers Correctional Centre currently has no doctor on staff.

Highlighting the capabilities of some correctional hospitals, he added that centres like Kuje are equipped to perform major surgeries. He also emphasized government efforts to train inmates through “train-the-trainer” programmes and increase their feeding allowance by 50 percent.

Tunji-Ojo stressed the importance of publicizing the Ministry of Interior’s achievements and collaborating with the Ministry of Information to enhance communication with Nigerians. He cited initiatives such as the creation of mine marshals in partnership with the Ministry of Solid Minerals, which have helped reduce criminality and protect national assets.

Responding, Idris pledged to strengthen communication of the ministry’s reforms to the public, ensuring that Nigerians are informed about government actions and policies.
