Four Killed in Late-Night Crash on Ijebu Ode–Ore Expressway

Date:

Four people lost their lives in a late-night road crash along the Ijebu-Imushin axis of the Ijebu Ode–Ore Expressway in Ogun State after a commercial bus rammed into a stationary truck, authorities confirmed on Tuesday.

The accident, which occurred at about 11:16 p.m. on Monday, involved a white Toyota Hiace bus with registration number BDJ 482 XC and a blue MAN Diesel truck belonging to Julius Berger Nigeria Plc.

Spokesperson for the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun State, Afolabi Odunsi-Oyewole, said all four occupants of the bus—two men and two women—were confirmed dead at the scene. No other injuries were recorded.

According to preliminary findings by the FRSC, the crash was caused by excessive speed.

Odunsi-Oyewole explained that the truck had been under tow when the towing chain snapped, leaving it stationary on the roadway. The speeding Toyota Hiace bus subsequently collided with the immobilised vehicle.

She added that the driver of the towing vehicle fled the scene after the chain failure, leaving the truck behind.

FRSC rescue operatives reportedly arrived at the scene within eight minutes of receiving the distress call and evacuated the victims’ remains to the State Hospital mortuary in Ijebu Ode.

Officers of the Nigeria Police Force from the Imushin Division have taken custody of the vehicles involved and commenced further investigation into the incident.

Meanwhile, the Ogun State FRSC Sector Commander, Akinwunmi Fasakin, urged motorists to observe speed limits, particularly during night travel, and ensure towing equipment meets safety standards to prevent avoidable crashes.

In a related development, one person died and three others were injured in a separate crash on March 2 at Aiyetoro Junction in the Epe area of Lagos State after a truck loaded with yams reportedly lost control while attempting a U-turn and collided with a commercial tricycle.
