Safety Concerns Grow Over Rooftop Solar Panels

Date:

The Federal Government, through the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA), has raised concerns over the rising number of fire incidents linked to improperly installed rooftop solar photovoltaic systems across Nigeria. The agency warned that poor workmanship, substandard materials, lack of protective devices, and non-compliance with technical standards are major causes of the growing safety risks.

NEMSA said although the adoption of solar energy is increasing as Nigerians seek alternatives to unreliable grid power, safety must remain a priority. In a public notice signed by the Chief Electrical Inspector of the Federation, the agency stressed that many reported fire outbreaks were preventable and tied to unsafe installation practices.

Citing provisions of the Electricity Act 2023, the agency issued fresh safety guidelines directing the public to engage only certified solar PV installers. It stated that installers must possess valid competency certificates and conduct proper load assessments before installation to ensure systems are appropriately sized and structurally supported by rooftops.

The agency also mandated the use of approved mounting structures, adequate ventilation clearance between panels and roofing materials, installation of DC and AC isolators, circuit breakers, surge protection devices, and proper earthing systems to reduce overheating and fire risks. It warned against using damaged solar panels and stressed that cables must be properly routed and separated to avoid electrical faults.

NEMSA further advised safe battery installation in well-ventilated locations away from living areas and called for regular maintenance of solar systems, including cleaning panels and inspecting cables and inverters. The agency urged installers and system owners to comply strictly with the guidelines to ensure safety, optimal performance, and regulatory compliance.
