President Donald Trump has reportedly directed U.S. national security officials to prepare for a long-term blockade of Iran’s ports, as part of efforts to pressure Tehran into abandoning its nuclear programme.
According to a report by the The Wall Street Journal, Trump expressed doubts about Iran’s willingness to negotiate in good faith and is seeking to force the country to halt uranium enrichment for up to 20 years, alongside accepting strict long-term restrictions.
During a meeting in the White House Situation Room, Trump reportedly ruled out both renewed military strikes and disengagement from the conflict, describing them as overly risky options. Instead, he opted for sustained economic and maritime pressure.
Under the plan, the United States Navy would intensify efforts to restrict Iran’s oil exports—widely seen as a critical source of revenue for the Iranian government—until it agrees to Washington’s terms.
“They better get smart soon!” Trump said in a post on his social media platform, underscoring his administration’s hardline stance.
The proposed blockade marks a significant escalation in U.S. strategy, shifting from direct confrontation to prolonged economic containment.
