Human Rights Centre Reacts to Killing of Ogidi Mena, Calls for Accountability and Justice in Delta

Date:

The Centre Against Injustice and Domestic Violence (CAIDOV) has condemned the killing of Ogidi Mena in Effurun, Delta State, describing the incident as murder and demanding the immediate arrest, dismissal, and prosecution of police officers allegedly involved. The group said the officers attached to the Efurun Area Command of the Nigeria Police Force were responsible for the shooting.

According to CAIDOV, the incident occurred on 28 April 2026 and was captured in video evidence showing the deceased seated on the ground in front of a marked police vehicle before he was shot. The organisation maintained that Mena was unarmed and did not pose any threat at the time of the incident.

The rights group said the killing amounted to a violation of Section 33 of the 1999 Constitution and breached established rules of engagement. It insisted that the act should be treated as murder rather than a disciplinary issue.

CAIDOV demanded the immediate removal from service of all officers involved, including those present at the scene, and rejected internal police disciplinary procedures. It also called for homicide charges against the alleged perpetrators instead of an orderly room trial.

The organisation further urged an independent investigation involving the National Human Rights Commission and the Police Service Commission within seven days, alongside compensation and a public apology to the victim’s family. The Delta State Police Command had yet to respond to the allegations at the time of filing the report.
