2027 Elections: Kogi East ADC Pushes for Direct Primaries

Date:

Leaders and stakeholders of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Kogi East have rejected the ongoing consensus arrangement for selecting candidates ahead of the forthcoming elections, insisting instead on the adoption of direct primaries to ensure internal democracy.

In a statement signed by spokesperson Mohammed Adaji, the group warned that the consensus approach could weaken transparency, undermine party unity, and reduce the ADC’s chances at the polls. They also alleged that the process was being influenced by associates of former Kogi State Deputy Governor, Simon Achuba.

The stakeholders expressed concern that replacing open primaries with consensus selection could create dissatisfaction among members and damage the party’s credibility in the region. They cited a recent disruption at a constituency meeting in Idah Federal Constituency as evidence of rising tensions within the party.

They therefore called on the party leadership to adopt transparent and inclusive direct primaries, arguing that it would help prevent further internal divisions and strengthen the ADC’s political standing in Kogi East ahead of the elections.

The group also appealed to prominent political figures, including Tunde Ogbeha, Bolaji Abdullahi, and former Senate President David Mark, to intervene and help restore unity, while noting that growing support for the ADC reflects public demand for fairness and improved political leadership in the region.
