A new report by Amnesty International has accused powerful nations, including the United States, Israel, and Russia, alongside their allies, of fuelling war crimes, genocide, state-backed lawlessness, and widespread human rights violations across 144 countries. The 2025/26 report, titled “The State of the World’s Human Rights,” warns that the global system is entering a “perilous new era” marked by unchecked violence and the weakening of international law.
The organisation said the world is witnessing a coordinated assault on the post–World War II international order, driven by powerful states pursuing control through unlawful wars, economic pressure, and disregard for global institutions. Amnesty Secretary-General Agnès Callamard warned that the current trajectory could lead to a “racist, patriarchal, unequal and anti-rights world order.”
The report made serious allegations against several countries, including claims that Israel is continuing “genocide against Palestinians in Gaza,” the United States carried out extrajudicial strikes in the Caribbean and Pacific regions, and Russia intensified attacks on civilian infrastructure in Ukraine. It also cited alleged atrocities in Sudan, Myanmar, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo involving state and armed group actors.
Amnesty further accused major powers of weakening global accountability systems, including the International Criminal Court (ICC), through sanctions, legal threats, and withdrawal from international treaties. It also raised concerns about rising repression worldwide, including mass arrests, surveillance, digital censorship, and the use of spyware to target activists and journalists in countries such as Kenya, India, China, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
Despite the grim assessment, the report highlighted growing global resistance through protests, civil society activism, and legal actions aimed at holding perpetrators accountable. Amnesty urged urgent international cooperation to defend human rights and reverse what it described as a dangerous slide into authoritarianism, warning that continued inaction could deepen global instability and suffering.
