Apapa Port Terminal Adopts Gas, Solar Energy Path

Date:

APM Terminals Apapa has announced a comprehensive one-year roadmap to transition from diesel to cleaner energy sources, including gas, solar, and battery-powered solutions, as part of its broader goal to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.

In a statement released Monday, Terminal Manager Steen Knudsen said the company has already commissioned two compressed natural gas (CNG) generators with a combined capacity of 4 megawatts to reduce reliance on diesel and align with the Nigerian government’s push for gas-powered infrastructure.

“This transition is not an overnight journey,” Knudsen said. “We have designed a roadmap to move from our current state to a fully decarbonised operation. Within the next 6 to 12 months, we will deploy an on-site solar solution to reduce diesel consumption by up to 30% and boost self-generation capabilities.”

The plan includes powering the terminal’s reefer plugs, lighting, and buildings entirely with gas in the near term, while progressively shifting to more sustainable energy options as technologies become available.

The announcement follows Nigeria’s recent one-day decarbonisation summit, which focused on bridging policy, finance, and technology gaps hindering the country’s low-carbon transition.

Chinyere Adenaike, Head of Procurement for APM Terminals Nigeria, praised the initiative, highlighting the terminal’s long-term aim of full equipment electrification and 100% renewable electricity use.

She emphasised that achieving net-zero emissions would require significant collaboration across government and private sectors, particularly in addressing current infrastructure limitations and regulatory bottlenecks.

“Nigeria’s abundant solar resources make it an ideal location for large-scale solar projects,” Adenaike added. “We are committed to leveraging this opportunity to drive green port operations.”
