ADC weighs consensus, primaries for 2027 Presidential Candidate

Date:

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) says it is considering two possible methods—consensus or primary election—to determine its presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 general elections.

This development comes as former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, and former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, all reportedly aligned with the ADC coalition, have expressed interest in running for president.

Political analysts have warned that the presence of multiple presidential hopefuls could spark internal divisions and potentially undermine the party’s chances against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking on Channels Television on Monday, ADC spokesperson Bolaji Abdullahi confirmed the party is focused on building internal structures and systems that reflect democratic values.

“We are preoccupied with the development of our party and putting up necessary systems to show Nigerians we are indeed a democratic party,” Abdullahi said.

He added that the ADC will first attempt to produce a flagbearer through a consensus arrangement. If that fails, the party will hold transparent primaries.

“We have two options. One is to engineer a consensus and, if that’s not achieved, we go into primaries. Whoever emerges will have the full backing of the party,” he said.

Abdullahi emphasized that the process would be fair, transparent, and representative of the party’s democratic ideals.

The ADC has recently gained attention as a possible unifying platform for opposition figures seeking to challenge the APC in the next election cycle.
