Kwara South Senatorial District is facing a worsening security crisis as bandits continue to hold more than 22 people hostage across several communities, demanding over N400 million in ransom, alongside food and drinks. The spate of abductions has heightened fear in the area, forcing some residents to flee their homes.
Findings show that nine people were abducted in Adanla community on December 26, 2025, with the bandits demanding N300 million for their release. In Isapa community, 11 persons are being held with a N35 million ransom demand, while other victims were kidnapped along the Isanlu–Isin highway, in Owa-Onire, and in Ikosin community, all within Kwara South.
Particularly alarming is the abduction of the Oniwo of Afin, Oba Olanipekun, and his son, a serving corps member. The bandits reportedly threatened to kill either the monarch or his son if their ransom demands are not met, further escalating tension in the affected communities.
Security sources said the bandits are exploiting the region’s vast forests, hills, caves, and porous borders to evade arrest. Allegations have also emerged that some locals are aiding the criminals as informants by providing food, shelter, and intelligence, a challenge authorities say they are working to address.
In response, the Kwara State Government, in collaboration with federal security agencies, has deployed forest guards, intensified joint patrols, and warned that it will not tolerate banditry. Recent operations have reportedly led to the neutralisation of some bandits and the arrest of suspected collaborators, while residents have been urged to support security efforts by reporting suspicious activities.
