Borno on Alert as Zulum Warns of Eid Bomb Threat

Date:

Borno State Governor, Babagana Umara Zulum, has warned residents of a possible terrorist attack in Maiduguri during Eid-el-Fitr celebrations, citing intelligence reports that two suspected suicide bombers may be planning strikes. He urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to security agencies.

The governor disclosed this in an interview with the BBC Hausa Service, noting that despite sustained military pressure on insurgents, they may attempt attacks in the city as a diversion. He, however, expressed confidence that security forces would prevent any breach.

Zulum’s warning comes days after multiple explosions in Maiduguri, including near the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital and other locations, which left over 20 people dead and more than 100 injured. The attacks occurred simultaneously on Monday evening, raising fresh concerns about security in the state.

Following his return from Saudi Arabia, the governor visited victims of the blasts and commended the Federal Government for swift interventions, including funding clearance operations and directing service chiefs to relocate to Maiduguri to strengthen security efforts.

He reassured residents of continued government support and maintained that the military and other agencies remain in control. Zulum urged the public to stay calm, remain security-conscious, and cooperate with authorities to prevent further attacks.
