The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has unveiled a record $10.4 million prize pool for the upcoming 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), signaling a significant financial boost for the tournament and a renewed push to elevate its prestige.
This edition marks the first time champions of the CHAN tournament—reserved for players active in their home national leagues—will receive $3.5 million, a 75% increase from the $2 million awarded at the previous edition.
According to prize distribution details released on Monday, the runners-up will earn $1.2 million, while the third-placed team will receive $700,000 and the fourth-placed team will take home $600,000.
All four quarter-finalists eliminated at that stage will receive $450,000 each. Additionally, group-stage teams will also benefit: third-place teams will receive $300,000, while fourth-place teams in four-team groups and bottom-placed teams in five-team groups will earn $200,000 each.
CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe described the move as part of broader efforts to grow African football. “This increase in prize money will support the development of locally based players and help strengthen the global competitiveness of African football,” Motsepe said in a statement.
He added that CHAN remains “a key part of our strategy to make African football more appealing to fans, sponsors, and global broadcasters.”
The 2024 CHAN tournament, officially titled CAF African Nations Championship Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda 2024, will be jointly hosted by the three East African nations from August 2 to 30, 2025. It will feature 19 teams, including defending champions Senegal, record holders Morocco and DR Congo, as well as Nigeria, Algeria, Guinea, and Zambia.
Nigeria’s Super Eagles are making a return to CHAN after missing the last edition. They booked their spot by defeating Ghana 3–1 on aggregate and are aiming to surpass their best-ever finish as runners-up in 2018.
Under the guidance of coach Eric Chelle, the team is expected to push for their first CHAN title, hoping to translate domestic strength into continental success.
