Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has said that the formation of the new opposition coalition, spearheaded by the African Democratic Congress (ADC), is aimed at defending Nigeria’s democracy from what he called the ruling party’s creeping authoritarianism.
Atiku, who was the 2023 presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), explained that the coalition’s goal is to resist the perceived manipulation of the electoral process under the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led government.
He clarified that the coalition is not about individual ambitions or rivalries among prominent political figures like himself, Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi, or Nasir El-Rufai, despite public speculation about a potential contest for the 2027 presidential ticket.
Atiku emphasized that the movement is not an anti-President Tinubu initiative but rather a “pro-Nigerian” effort focused on safeguarding democratic values.
“This is not an anti-Tinubu project; it is a pro-Nigerian movement. Nigerians must be the ultimate beneficiaries of this effort,” he said.
The coalition, he added, is committed to protecting the integrity of the country’s democratic institutions and ensuring credible electoral processes.
