Nigeria’s dominance in African women’s football was further confirmed on Monday as four Super Falcons players were named in the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) Team of the Tournament, following their title-winning campaign in Morocco.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) announced the tournament’s Best XI just two days after Nigeria secured a record-extending 10th WAFCON title, defeating hosts Morocco 3–2 in a thrilling final in Rabat.
Chiamaka Nnadozie led Nigeria’s representation in the all-star lineup. The goalkeeper was also crowned Best Goalkeeper of the Tournament, having kept four clean sheets and conceded just three goals in six matches. Her standout saves were pivotal in the Falcons’ progress through the knockout stages.
Michelle Alozie, Nigeria’s right-back, earned her place in the Best XI with consistent performances marked by strong defensive work and dangerous forward runs. Her dual-role contributions were key to Nigeria’s balanced tactical setup.
Captain Rasheedat Ajibade was named Player of the Tournament, having delivered three Player of the Match performances. She impressed with her leadership and tactical versatility, often dropping deep to control midfield play while maintaining her attacking threat.
Forward Esther Okoronkwo completed the Super Falcons’ quartet. She scored in the final and assisted two other goals, earning the Player of the Match award in the title decider. Her energy and sharp movement proved decisive in the final comeback against Morocco.
The Team of the Tournament also included three South African players, two each from Morocco and Ghana. Morocco’s Ghizlane Chebbak, the tournament’s top scorer with five goals, featured in midfield alongside Ghana’s Grace Asantewaa and South Africa’s Refiloe Jane.
Defensively, Karabo Dhlamini and Bambanani Mbane (South Africa) were named alongside Ghana’s Portia Boakye. Morocco’s Ibtissam Jraidi rounded out the forward line with her impressive hold-up play and link-up ability.
