The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) has designated all correctional centres across the country as “Red Zones” ahead of the nationwide protest scheduled for Monday, October 20, 2025, calling for the release of detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Service’s Public Relations Officer, Umar Abubakar, warned that correctional facilities remain highly restricted areas and that any attempt to stage protests or breach security around them would not be tolerated.
“The Nigerian Correctional Service wishes to inform the general public that all correctional centres nationwide are designated as no-protest zones. These facilities are highly restricted areas, and any attempt to breach security around them will not be tolerated,” the statement read in part.
Abubakar urged citizens to remain law-abiding and cooperate with security agencies to maintain peace and order during the demonstrations. He emphasized that avoiding restricted zones, particularly prisons, is essential to preventing confrontations with law enforcement.
The warning comes amid increased security presence across several states as authorities brace for the planned pro-Kanu protests organized by groups demanding his release from custody.
