Dele Momodu Explains Why Jonathan, Obi Can’t Defeat Tinubu in 2027

A member of the opposition coalition and veteran journalist, Dele Momodu, has said former President Goodluck Jonathan and ex-presidential candidate Peter Obi would struggle to defeat President Bola Tinubu if they contest against him in the 2027 general election.

Momodu argued that Tinubu has already consolidated political control over Southern Nigeria, leaving the opposition with the strategic task of securing strong support in the North to remain competitive.

In a post shared on his verified X handle, the publisher of Ovation International magazine said the opposition must act decisively if it hopes to challenge the ruling party in the next election.

“I still choose to be a chronic optimist even at this stage. Several scenarios may still play out. The opposition has only one option left in order to be competitive,” Momodu wrote.

“Since Tinubu has already locked down the South of Nigeria, seemingly, the opposition must work speedily to lock down the North. With common sense, this is feasible, even if difficult,” he added.

Momodu further stated that no southern candidate, including Jonathan or Obi, could mount a serious challenge against Tinubu in 2027, warning that running as perceived independent candidates would likely lead to a “spectacular failure.”
