Digital economy is the present, future of Nigerians-NITDA

The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has said digital economy is the present and future of young Nigerians, with Nigeria already on the global map of digital nations.

The Director General, NITDA, Kashifu Inuwa gave the affirmation to wrap up the week long National Privacy Week Awareness Workshop in Abuja, saying that the ultimate goal of the national privacy day awareness workshop and celebration is to raise awareness, promote privacy, and data protection practices.

The DG recalled that the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, my predecessor Dr. Isa Pantami had on 25th January 2019, issued the Nigeria Data Protection Regulation (NDPR) 2019 as a response to the global call for privacy regulation and in consonance with the federal government initiative to make Nigeria globally competitive business environment.

” It’s interesting to know that from inception, the government of President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR has been driving economic reforms. Economic Recovery and Growth Plan, ERGP is one of the government initiatives for economic change, among others,” He added.

The DG noted that the progress achieved since issuance of the NDPR is awe-inspiring beyond expectation.

“Issuance of Twenty-Seven DPCO licenses that have created over 1000 jobs and generated a sector currently valued at about N2 billion. Inauguration and capacity building of the Data Breach Investigation Team and Police Enforcement Team.

“We have treated over 1,200 inquiries and requests for clarifications, NITDA officials have made presentations in over 80 events where we have been invited.
Training of Media Executives on Data Protection.Training of newly appointed Data Protection Officers,” He further maintained.

He urged all and sundry to be conscious about privacy because whoever controls data controls your world.

AbdulHakeem Ajijola in his remarks explained that Internet has reached a pivotal point, where some level of regulation is required to
ensure the stability, integrity and survivability of the platform.

However, there are fine lines between suitable legislation, regulation, censorship and abuse of digital rights. While the fundamentals behind the failures and challenges of technology are often human failings and frailties such as greed, lies, incompetence, ego, state funded cyber-actors, extremism and terrorist motivated hackers.

He said it is therefore a must to understand the underlying issues of culture, education and circumstances so that one can learn to appreciate weakness and endeavour to fix them, as issues of national and corporate leadership that must be dealth with to ensure short and long-term national, corporate competitiveness, survivability and to secure citizens
wellbeing and livelihoods.
