The Zonal Coordinator of the Joint Border Operations Team incharge of Kwara, Kogi, Niger and Benue states, U.G. Mohammed, on Thursday disclosed that the operation of his team has reduced influx of arms and ammunitions and has subsequently improved the security in the country.
He noted that since the border was shut, more than 12,000 bags of rice, 177 vehicles and many other contrabands have been seized while immigration of bandits has been prevented within his area of coverage.
Mohammed spoke when he led members of his team on courtesy visit to the Emir of Ilorin and Chairman Kwara State Traditional Council, Mai-Martaba Alhaji Ibrahim Sulu-Gambari, in his palace.
The visit, according to the Zonal Coordinator was to familiarise the team with the monarch for further support and cooperation in the discharge of their duties.
He further stressed that the efforts of the joint task force team has no doubtimproved the economy of the country since local goods are now available in the markets even as he thanked the He traditional rulers in the state for their assistance.
“No government will be succeed without the cooperation of traditional institutions” , he added.
In his remarks, Alhaji Sulu-Gambari expressed his happiness over the visit and lecture given to him by the coordinator of the team on reasons that made government to shut Nigerian borders.
The Emir said: “Government should endeavour to always sensitise people on its policy so that it will not be misconstrued. Nigerian borders are porous thereby making them penetrable by insurgents or diseases from neighbouring countries.”
He therefore praised the government’s action and vowed to always assist security agencies to ensure that Kwara remains peaceful.
