JUST IN………Osun Varsity shut-down indefinitely

Osun state university has been shut down and students sent home due to growing tensions among the students.

After two students were allegedly shot by the Nigerian police while playing football on Sunday, January 21, another student of UNIOSUN is reportedly dead. The university has lost no less than 4 students under different circumstances in less than a month.

The school was shut down after a protest broke out over the death of one Feyisara Odeyinka of the Department of Anatomy on Monday, January 23.

According to Daily Trust, Feyisara was a sickle cell patient and was admitted in a private hospital after falling sick.

The doctor had said she would be placed on admission but the student declined and insisted she wants to return to her hostel.

Reports indicated that when the sickness got worse in her hostel and she was eventually rushed back to the same hospital, where she gave up while receiving treatment.

Protests broke out after news of Feyisara’s death spread and students allegedly attempted to burn down the hospital.

When interviewed by pressmen, a student said: “The lady that died was a sickle cell patient. She had a crisis and was rushed to the hospital at Oke Baale. Those on duty attended to her but she died. Students were just sad by the development and some burst into tears but nobody attempted to burn the hospital.

“The deceased’s brother, who is a student of Fountain University, also came to the hospital and he saw how his sister was attended to, but it is a pity, she died.”

The police public relations officer in Osun state, Folasade Odoro said: “There is no report that the students wanted to set the hospital ablaze but we heard that they were mourning the student who died.”

The school has now been shut down as a result of the tension generated by both incidents.

The Vice Chancellor, Professor Labode Popoola, said the students would be recalled very soon.

Meanwhile, Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has banned University of Ilorin from carrying out any academic and non-academic activity. The members of the association has been asked to disrupt every activity in the university. The staff of this school are not allowed to carry out any work in the school premises.

Also, ASUU has instructed its members in other universities not to assist Unilorin with any academic activity. This means that research, teaching, assessment, moderation and setting of examination by other lecturers outside the university will not be possible for the time being. Part time lecturing, sabbatical, visiting and adjunct appointments will no longer be allowed.
