Lakurawa Fighters Attack Wood Producers in Sokoto Forest

Date:

Suspected Lakurawa fighters have reportedly attacked charcoal and firewood producers on the outskirts of Mai-Kurhuna village in the Kebbe Forest area of Kebbe Local Government Area, Sokoto State, resulting in civilian deaths and destruction of property.

The incident was disclosed on Thursday by Bakatsine, a conflict and crisis journalist known for reporting on insecurity in Nigeria’s northwest.

According to the report, the attackers targeted civilians engaged in charcoal and firewood production, killing several people and destroying trucks and motorcycles used for transporting goods. The assault reportedly led to the loss of livelihoods for many residents who depend on forest-based activities.

Survivors were said to have fled the area in fear of further attacks, abandoning their work sites and belongings as they escaped from the forest.

Bakatsine said those affected are appealing for urgent security intervention to prevent additional violence and to restore safety to the community.

The attack adds to growing concerns over insecurity in parts of Sokoto State, where armed groups have increasingly targeted rural communities and economic activities.

As of the time of reporting, there was no official response from security agencies or the Sokoto State Government on the incident.
