Manchester City forward Omar Marmoush has been ruled out of Sunday’s Manchester derby after suffering a knee ligament injury while on international duty with Egypt.
The 26-year-old was forced off just four minutes into Egypt’s goalless World Cup qualifier against Burkina Faso in Ouagadougou on Tuesday. He attempted to continue after a heavy challenge but was unable to carry on.
“Initial results on a scan performed in Egypt indicate he will not be available for the Manchester derby on Sunday, and he will now return to Manchester for more assessment and to begin his rehabilitation,” City said in a statement on Wednesday.
The Egyptian Football Association had earlier described the injury as a “bruised knee ligament.”
Marmoush joined City from Eintracht Frankfurt in January for £59 million ($79.8 million) and has since scored eight goals in 28 appearances across all competitions.
His absence is a blow for Pep Guardiola’s side, who face Manchester United this weekend after a shaky start to the Premier League campaign, losing two of their first three matches.
