The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has condemned the recent bomb explosions in Maiduguri, urging urgent measures to protect healthcare facilities and personnel in conflict-prone areas.
In a statement on Tuesday, NARD President Dr. Mohammad Suleiman described the Monday night blasts as “tragic, barbaric, and unacceptable.” The attacks affected multiple locations in the city, including the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital (UMTH), the largest tertiary health facility in North-East Nigeria.
“Hospitals are sacred spaces meant for healing, hope, and preservation of life. To witness such a place targeted by acts of violence is both painful and unacceptable,” the association said. It noted with relief that none of its members at UMTH were harmed during the incident.
NARD commended resident doctors, medical and dental students, and other healthcare workers for their professionalism and courage in attending to victims, while also praising UMTH management for their swift coordination in handling the emergency.
The association extended condolences to the government and people of Borno State, as well as families of victims. It called on the Federal Government and security agencies to strengthen security around hospitals, particularly in vulnerable areas, through improved surveillance, increased security presence, and strategic deployment of Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) units.
NARD also urged proactive measures to prevent future attacks and ensure the safety of both healthcare workers and patients. The association expressed hope for the quick recovery of the injured and prayed for the repose of the souls of those who lost their lives.
