An NGO, Yield Africa Foundation donates educational materials to Ribiatu Thompson Nursery and Primary School, Shitta-Surulere, Lagos.
Yield Africa Foundation, an NGO, on Wednesday distributed some educational materials to the pupils of a public school, Rabiatu Thompson Nursery and Primary School, Shitta, Surulere, Lagos.
Mr Olatunde Martins, Founder of the NGO, said the purpose of distributing the educational materials to the pupils were to encourage learning and ensure children had access to quality education.
Martins said that some of the educational materials distributed to the students were 6,000 exercise books and other writing materials for nursery and primary schools.
“Our aim of distributing these materials is to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goal on Education.
“During the COVID-19 lockdown, we also distributed some educational materials to some students living within Oshodi community to encourage their learning process.
“The impact of COVID-19 pandemic affected some families in Lagos who cannot provide educational materials for their children after schools’ resumption, that is why we have decided to support them.
“We are planning to go to other public nursery and primary schools in different local governments within Lagos State,’’ he said.
Martins said that Lagos State Education Board which was in charge of nursery and primary schools had been doing a lot to improve standards in schools in the state.
“While we visited different schools, we discovered that a lot of things still needed to be done.
“Some of the schools lack teachers which resulted in merging of different classes as well as volunteers’ teacher who were not being paid.
“Lagos State Government and other NGOs need to support and provide necessary infrastructure, equipment and materials to all schools lacking them.
“Our organisation will continue to support government schools and also reward every best pupil at the end of the session,’’ he said.
Also, Mrs Yetunde Fatoke, Education Secretary, Surulere Local Government Education Authority, Lagos, commended the foundation for supporting and contributing education materials to their schools.
Fatoke told the NGO that the environment and classrooms were very conducive for learning.
“We realised that this NGO is ready for us and we appreciate whatever they contributed to the school and students.
“This contribution is a thing of joy and will go a long way because some of the students do not have writing materials.
“I appeal to other NGOs to emulate Yield Africa Foundation and always ask for the needs of different schools because they are so many,’’ she said.
