NLC Demands N154,000 Minimum Wage Amid Rising Cost of Living

Date:

The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has called for a new national minimum wage of N154,000, citing worsening economic conditions and declining purchasing power among Nigerian workers.

The demand was outlined in a letter issued by the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council (JNPSNC), an arm of the NLC. The letter was signed by Benjamin Anthony and Olowoyo Gbenga.

In the communication, the council emphasised the “urgent necessity for an upward review of salaries and allowances” across the public service, noting that the current wage structure no longer reflects prevailing economic realities.

The council highlighted the impact of rising inflation, escalating food prices, and increasing transportation costs, which it said have significantly eroded workers’ incomes.

According to the union, the proposed N154,000 minimum wage is intended to restore a reasonable standard of living for public sector employees. It also urged the Federal Government to commence immediate negotiations on the matter.

The demand comes amid growing concerns over Nigeria’s cost-of-living crisis, with many households struggling to meet basic needs.
