The Vice Chancellor of Bells University of Technology, Prof. Jeremiah Ojediran, has reaffirmed the institution’s commitment to tackling Nigeria’s developmental challenges by training young people to engage in research and innovation that address real-life problems.
Speaking during the 17th Convocation Press Conference held at the university’s campus in Ota, Ogun State, Ojediran said Bells University remains focused on producing graduates who are job creators rather than job seekers, equipped with practical skills to establish and sustain businesses.
He explained that the university identifies gaps in the country’s development and leverages research from both lecturers and students to offer practical, research-driven solutions.
Citing an example, the Vice Chancellor said students were trained in interlocking production and construction, and before graduation, they handled the interlocking of the university’s premises. Many of them, he added, have since established thriving businesses using the skills they acquired.
Prof. Ojediran also disclosed that the university is exploring the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to address critical issues such as food security and other pressing national concerns.
Highlighting the institution’s steady growth, he announced that 1,016 students will graduate during the upcoming 20th anniversary and 17th convocation ceremony. He noted that the number of applicants to the university has doubled from 2,000 to 4,000, reflecting its rising reputation and impact.
He further revealed that some members of the Board of Trustees and two foundation professors who contributed to the university’s establishment 20 years ago will be specially honoured during the anniversary celebration.
Prof. Ojediran expressed appreciation to the university’s founder, former President Olusegun Obasanjo, for his enduring vision and support. He also commended the university’s staff for their dedication and contributions to its continued progress.
According to him, activities lined up for the celebration include a medical outreach, a convocation lecture, and visits to neighbouring communities that have supported the university since its inception.
