Olaniyan Resigns as FCE (Special) Oyo Council Chairman Ahead of 2027 Elections

Date:

Former Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Rauf Olaniyan, has resigned as Chairman of the Governing Council of the Federal College of Education (Special), Oyo.

His resignation follows a directive by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu requiring all political appointees with ambitions to contest in the 2027 general elections to step down from their positions before March 31, 2026.

Also expected to resign in the coming days are the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, and Adebayo Shittu, who currently serves as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council of the David Umahi Federal University of Health Sciences, as they prepare to pursue their gubernatorial ambitions.

Olaniyan conveyed his decision in a resignation letter addressed to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation on Monday, stating that his move was driven by his intention to pursue political ambitions ahead of the 2027 elections.

“I write to formally tender my resignation from my appointment as Chairman, Governing Council of Federal College of Education (Special), Oyo, with effect from March 23, 2026,” the letter read.

He noted that his decision was in compliance with the directive requiring political appointees and public office holders with electoral ambitions to resign ahead of party primaries, as stipulated in the 2026 Electoral Act.

Olaniyan expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve, stating that it was a privilege to contribute to the development of the institution during his tenure.

He also recommended Barrister (Mrs.) Inime Aguma to serve as Acting Chairman of the Governing Council, citing her competence, commitment, and leadership capacity to advance the objectives of the college.

“I also wish to place on record my appreciation to the management, staff, and students of the college for their support during my period of service,” he added.

Olaniyan previously served as Deputy Governor under Seyi Makinde during his first term before his removal and replacement with Bayo Lawal.
