A petrol tanker carrying 33,000 litres of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) caught fire on Thursday evening at Celica Junction along the New Ife Expressway in Ibadan, Oyo State.
The incident occurred around 6:27 p.m. and was reportedly caused by brake failure, which led the tanker to lose control and collide with a Prado Jeep and another vehicle before overturning and igniting.
Although no lives were lost, the fire affected the tanker, the car, and pushed the Prado Jeep into a nearby gutter, officials confirmed.
Chairman of the Oyo State Fire Service, Hon. Maroof Akinwande, confirmed the incident, stating that firefighters responded swiftly and deployed chemical foam to contain the flames.
“The fire was restricted from spreading to the nearby NNPC petrol station and surrounding properties,” Akinwande said. “Our men worked in collaboration with officers from the Federal Fire Service to extinguish the blaze.”
He added that the blaze was entirely brought under control, and investigations into the full cause of the incident are ongoing.
Emergency responders have since cleared the scene, and traffic along the expressway has resumed normal flow. Authorities have urged motorists and fuel transport operators to adhere to strict safety standards.
