The Taraba State Police Command confirmed that five persons died after allegedly consuming meat laced with poison in Takum Local Government Area. The incident reportedly occurred on Tuesday and left eight other persons hospitalised for treatment.
According to the police spokesperson, preliminary findings indicate that the meat may have been contaminated with a toxic substance used for rodent control. Authorities said officers were deployed to the area immediately after receiving the report.
The affected individuals were rushed to nearby medical facilities, while the bodies of the deceased were taken for necessary procedures. Police have since launched a comprehensive investigation to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
Authorities urged residents to report any suspicious food items or sudden illnesses to the nearest police station to prevent further loss of life. They assured the public that efforts are ongoing to uncover the cause of the incident.
The command pledged that anyone found responsible for the poisoning will be brought to justice as investigations continue.
