Sa’adu Zungur University, Bauchi State, has matriculated 4,024 students for the 2025/2026 academic session, with the management declaring zero tolerance for cultism and other social vices.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Fatima Tahir, made the declaration on Wednesday at the institution’s 13th matriculation ceremony held at the Yuli Campus. She was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Bala Ma’aji.
Tahir said the ceremony was the fourth matriculation conducted under her administration since assuming office, noting that the exercise formally inducted the students as bona fide members of the university community after taking the oath of allegiance.
“I congratulate the successful candidates for gaining admission in the 2025/2026 academic session. Out of 9,378 applicants shortlisted, only 4,024 were offered admission, while over 4,000 qualified candidates could not be accommodated,” she said.
The Vice-Chancellor assured parents and guardians that the university would continue to uphold academic integrity and safeguard the welfare of students.
She warned that the institution would not tolerate anti-social behaviours such as cultism, examination malpractice, sexual harassment, drug abuse, indecent dressing, truancy, vandalism and the practice of students offering inducements to lecturers.
“The university will not hesitate to take disciplinary action against any student found wanting. The oath taken today is a commitment to abide by the laws, statutes and regulations of the university,” Tahir said.
She also advised students to remain security-conscious and to promptly report suspicious activities to the appropriate authorities within the institution.
Tahir commended the Bauchi State Government, under Governor Bala Mohammed, for its continued support to education, as well as the Shell Petroleum Development Company for constructing an ICT centre at the Gadau Campus and TETFund for building 48 female hostels at the Yuli Campus.
She further appealed to host communities to intensify efforts toward ensuring security, noting that the university experienced security challenges in the previous academic session.
A breakdown of the newly admitted students showed that the Faculty of Science admitted the highest number with 935 students, followed by Social Sciences with 877, Management Sciences with 587, Basic Medical Sciences with 507, Education with 461, Agriculture with 335, Arts with 205, Law with 59 and Pharmaceutical Sciences with 58.
Of the total number of matriculated students, 1,434 are female, while 2,590 are male.
