Sanwo-Olu Says Lagos Has No Outstanding Pension Arrears

Date:

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has assured that Lagos State has no outstanding pension arrears, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to the welfare and dignity of retirees.

The assurance was conveyed in a statement issued Monday by the governor’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Gbenga Akosile, following a courtesy visit by the senior management team of the Pension Transitional Arrangement Directorate (PTAD).

The PTAD delegation, led by Executive Secretary Tolulope Odunaiya, met with the governor at Lagos House, Marina.

Sanwo-Olu said pensioners are held in high regard by his administration, stressing that fairness, equity and respect for retired public servants remain a priority.

“We in Lagos State recognise and value the contributions of our pensioners. They have devoted significant parts of their lives to public service, and we remain committed to treating them with the dignity they deserve,” he said.

On pension reforms under the contributory pension scheme, the governor maintained that the state had cleared all outstanding liabilities. “Currently, Lagos State is the only state without any pension arrears. Over the past three years, we have settled all outstanding obligations. No pensioner can claim that we owe them years of unpaid benefits,” he added.

He also stated that retirees with complete documentation now receive their pensions within two to three months of exiting service, describing the timeline as part of efforts to build a responsive and efficient system.

Sanwo-Olu pledged continued collaboration with PTAD to enhance the welfare of pensioners residing in the state.

Speaking during the visit, Odunaiya disclosed that nearly 200,000 pensioners under the Defined Benefit Scheme nationwide live in Lagos and called for sustained cooperation with the state government. She also referenced reforms approved in August 2025 by President Bola Tinubu under the Defined Benefit Pension Scheme aimed at strengthening social protection for senior citizens.
