The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has expelled former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, and barred him from participating in any party activities for the next 30 years.
This decision follows an internal investigation by the party into allegations that El-Rufai falsely claimed SDP membership without proper registration. According to reports, the party accused him of forging documents to list himself as “number 001” in the party’s register at Unguwar Sarki Ward in Kaduna North, despite no official record of his registration at the ward level.
The SDP leadership stated that El-Rufai’s actions caused confusion among members and the public. His public appearances with suspended national chairman Shehu Musa Gabam and other party officials, the SDP claimed, were part of an effort to mislead observers into believing he had formally joined the party.
Further compounding the matter, the SDP alleged that El-Rufai attempted to drag the party into an unauthorized political alliance while simultaneously expressing support for the African Democratic Congress (ADC), raising questions about his loyalty and intentions.
Citing misconduct, manipulation, and actions deemed harmful to the party’s image and stability, the SDP declared El-Rufai unfit for future political engagement within its structure, resulting in a rare 30-year ban.
