Super Falcons Seek Redemption in Yaoundé After Narrow Defeat to Cameroon

Date:

Nigeria’s Super Falcons return to action in Yaoundé on Tuesday determined to respond after suffering a 1–0 defeat to Cameroon in the first of two international friendlies over the weekend.

The reigning African champions were edged out by a stoppage-time strike at the Military Stadium last Saturday, handing the Indomitable Lionesses an early advantage in the preparatory series ahead of this year’s Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

Cameroon’s winner came deep into added time when Yvana Mbomezomo fired from distance to beat Nigeria’s debutant goalkeeper, Comfort Erhabor. The young goalkeeper had impressed throughout the match with composed handling and solid decision-making before conceding late.

Nigeria pushed for an equaliser in the second half as head coach Justin Madugu introduced attacking options including Joy Omewa, Precious Christopher, Folashade Ijamilusi, Esther Onyenezide and Michelle Alozie. However, Cameroon goalkeeper Ange Bawou produced key saves to preserve the narrow lead.

For the rematch, Madugu is expected to adjust his starting lineup as the Falcons aim for better balance and sharper finishing. Veteran goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie could return between the posts, while Alozie may feature in defence alongside Oluwatosin Demehin, Osinachi Ohale and Glory Ogbonna.

Midfield options include Onyenezide, Christopher, Christy Ucheibe, Ngozi Okobi-Okeoghene and Jennifer Echegini, offering tactical flexibility. In attack, captain Rasheedat Ajibade, Gift Monday, Rinsola Babajide, Chinwendu Ihezuo and Ijamilusi remain key players expected to provide creativity and goals.

Although the friendly carries no tournament points, the fixture remains highly competitive given the longstanding rivalry between both teams. With preparations intensifying ahead of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, Nigeria will be eager to deliver a stronger performance and rebuild momentum.
