  • Police arrest 5 suspected cultists, drug barons in Ekiti

    The suspects are Adewumi Gboyega, Temitope Oyeyemi, Kazeem Ayomide, Adewumi Praise and Olayinka Emmanuel.

    Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Ekiti State command, ASP Sunday Abutu, in a statement yesterday, said on February 18, at about 02:30 hours.

    Abutu, said the command received a credible tip off that a group of suspected cultists were sighted in a hotel located in Ikere local government.

    According to Abutu, the operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, RRS, were able to arrest the suspects at the hotel in the town.

    The PPRO added that items found in their possession and recovered includes 3 raps if suspected Arizona hemp, 50 raps of suspected cocaine, 15 packs of suspected loud hemp, 20 raps of weeds suspected to be Indian hemp, 10 gas lighters, 1 sharp knife and a cash of N76,900.

    Abutu pointed out that during interrogation, the arrested suspects confessed to be illicit drug dealers.

    The Commissioner of Police in Ekiti State, Mr. Tunde Mobayo, promised that the command will not relent in its efforts to cripple the activities of criminals and criminalities in the state.

    Mobayo, commended members of the public for their cooperation and support in providing timely and useful information to the police to arrest criminals in the society.

    Ekiti Govt restates commitment to doctors’ welfare


    The Ekiti Government has restated its commitment to the welfare of medical doctors to boost healthcare delivery in the state.

    This is contained in a statement in Ado-Ekiti, jointly signed by Dr Oyebanji Filani, Commissioner for Health and Human Services and Mr Akin Omole, Commissioner for Information and Value Orientation.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports resident doctors at the Ekiti University Teaching Hospital, Ado Ekiti, began on strike on Thursday.

    The development, according to the president of the association Dr Olaniyi Olaoye, was due to the irregularities in the payment of their salaries attributed to alleged reduction in the monthly subvention to the hospital by government.

    The government said it viewed the development as a source of concern, saying it nonetheless appreciates the understanding of all government workers, especially the health workers.

    It advised the health workers and practitioners to remain calm and dedicated to duty as it was still neck-deep in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic.

    “As efforts are being put in place to amicably resolve this issue as quickly as possible,” the statement said.

    The government directed EKSU management to ensure an uninterrupted medical services in the institution.

    It said: “Strike actions can be counterproductive, especially in the health sector.

    “The Government of Ekiti wishes to state clearly that the welfare of the health and medical workers in the state is a major priority of Governor Kayode Fayemi-led administration.

    “To further assure the good people of Ekiti of better healthcare service delivery, we have embarked on massive renovation of both primary and secondary health facilities across the state.

    “Adequately equipping them with modern medical equipment and supplies which also provide conducive working environment for our health workers.

    “We remain committed to protecting the health of all indigenes and residents of Ekiti while ensuring that workers are duly remunerated for their selfless service.”

    APC remains one indivisible party in Ekiti – Stakeholders


    All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ekiti says it remains a united and indivisible family in the state.

    The party’s Caretaker Chairman in the state, Mr Paul Omotoso, stated this in a communiqué issued to newsmen on Monday after a stakeholders’ meeting, held in Ado-Ekiti.

    The communiqué said that members must eschew divisive tendencies and work together to better the lots of the party.

    “The leaders present at our meeting affirmed that APC in Ekiti is one big, united family and that there is only one unified party structure that accommodates the interests of all bona fide members.

    “The meeting emphasised the need for all members to eschew divisive tendencies and work towards ensuring that the party is inclusive and consultative in decisions that affect members,” it said.

    The communiqué also stated that guidelines for the conduct of the state congress, as directed by the national secretariat, said that only fully registered and financially up- to-date members would be allowed to vote and be voted for.

    The party, however, said that no member currently holding elective or appointive position in government in the state would be allowed to stand for election into any position.

    It added that there would be mass publicity on the dates and venues of the congresses to ensure that members were well-informed.

    The communiqué further enjoined all party members to actively participate in the ongoing continuous voter registration exercise by INEC.

    The party also lauded what it called the developmental stride of the Gov. Kayode Fayemi-led administration in the state, calling on the resident to continue to support the government.

    FUOYE Top Up programme admits 537 HND students -VC


    The Vice Chancellor of Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE),Prof. Abayomi Fasina says the institution has admitted 537 students of Higher National Diploma (HND) into it’s Top Up and Conversion Programme.

    Fasina said this at the matriculation ceremony held at the Federal Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti, study centre of the programme on Friday.

    The matriculation was attended by students from Faculties of Agriculture, Engineering, Management Sciences, Sciences and Social Sciences.

    Fasina, who was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor Administration, Prof. Jeremiah Omotola, congratulated the matriculating students.

    He commended the students for their determination to further improve their academic careers in spite of the rigorous screenings they encountered before getting admitted.

    Fasina explained that matriculation in all higher institutions of learning marked the formal admission of new students into the university and that it was an occasion during which new students pledged their allegiance to the authority of the institution.

    ” We are admitting a total number of 537 students for our Top Up and Conversion to give you an opportunity to salvage the undying discrepancies of HND, Third class or Pass degrees.

    ” We are determined to equip you with quality education but to develop the spirit of intellectual enquiry, curiosity and resilience and also to build your character and uprightness.

    ” The matriculation ceremony is ushering you all to an academic environment filled with quality education and I urge you to abide by your oath of allegiance to the university.”

    The vice chancellor urged the students to shun all forms of social vices such as cultism, indecent dressing, examination malpractices, sexual misbehaviour and other anti social behaviours that could destroy their careers.

    “As the current vice chancellor of this great university, alongside teaching and non teaching staff, we are determined to make your experience in FUOYE rewarding, memorable and excellent,” he said.

    Also Speaking, the Acting Director of the Top Up and Conversion Programme, Dr Olaide Hammed, said that the programme offered courses in five faculties at the study centre.

    Olaide advised the newly admitted students to uphold themselves in a good manner and be free to verify information about their choice of courses and the programme itself.

    The News Agency of Nigeria reports NAN reports that the Acting Registrar of the university, Mr Mufutau Ibrahim administered the matriculation oath on the students.

    Ekiti Govt takes delivery of additional 40,000 COVID-19 vaccines

    Ekiti Government said, on Sunday, it had taken delivery of another batch of 40,000 AstraZeneca vaccines from the National Primary Health Care Development Agency.

    Dr Oyebanji Filani, Commissioner for Health and Human Services, in a statement in Ado-Ekiti said the delivery of the second consignment would enable the state to continue inoculating its residents against the virus.

    Filani said that 52,960 doses of the vaccines, earlier delivered to the state, were duly utilised.

    He reiterated the commitment of the current administration to the provision of quality and accessible health care to the citizenry.

    The commissioner added that the state would leave no stone unturned toward ensuring that people are vaccinated.

    He advised residents to take advantage of government’s gesture to get vaccinated, stressing that getting immunised remained the most effective way to checkmate the virus.

    He also appealed that people should continue to adhere to required public health and social measures outlined by government to curtail the spread of the virus.

    Filani added that wear facemask in public gatherings, maintain hand hygiene through proper hand washing, use of alcohol based sanitizers and social distancing even after receiving the vaccines remained sacrosanct.

    Gov. Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti on Saturday extolled the virtues of his deputy, Chief Bisi Egbeyemi, on the occasion of the latter’s 77th birthday.

    The governor, in a statement by Mr Yinka Oyebode, his Chief Press Secretary, noted that Egbeyemi had consistently proved to be “a reliable ally, astute technocrat and illustrious statesman“.

    He said Egbeyemi remained a great asset to his administration having deployed his experience as a seasoned administrator, lawyer and community leader.

    He also described the deputy governor as a strong pillar who had contributed immensely to the actualisation of the five-point development agenda of his administration.

    “On behalf of my wife, Bisi, the government and good people of Ekiti state, I congratulate Chief Egbeyemi and wish him a happy birthday.

    ” I pray that God continues to bless him with good health and wisdom to make more remarkable contributions to this administration’s quest for a better Ekiti State.

    “Our prayer is that he will live the rest of his years in good health, excellent spirit and undiluted joy” the governor said.

    The Wife of Ekiti State Governor, Mrs Bisi Fayemi, has said it might be difficult for a female president to emerge in Nigeria anytime soon owing to the country’s hostile political system.

    Mrs Fayemi, however, added that the country is ripe enough to be governed by a female President because of the vast women resources at its disposal, reiterating that the operational system might impede this from being realised now.

    ROYAL NEWS reports that Mrs Fayemi spoke in Ado Ekiti on Friday at an event organised by “Above Whispers Media Foundation”, in collaboration with the Association of Nigerian Authors (ANA) signposting the first public book reading of her latest book titled: ‘Where Is Your Wrapper?’, to mark the 2021 World Book Day.

    Mrs Fayemi warned that female gender shouldn’t misconstrue the phenomenon to mean fighting for women blindly, saying she would only defend and promote women who value dignity, self respect and walk on the path of truthfulness .

    She said: “Nigeria is ripe for a female presidency, but we won’t have one anytime soon because those who are controlling power and in leadership positions have a way of keeping the female gender away from power.

    “Despite this treatment, we are proud that we have women like Okonjo Iweala, who is the Director General of the World Trade Organisation, and others who are faces of respect to women.

    “So, technically, we are ready for it. We have the people with exposure and education, but we have to build a system that will allow them realise their full potentials within the political space,” she stated.

    Mrs Fayemi said feminism is gradually gaining ground in Nigeria owing to widespread belief that “women should have rights, should not be battered, should have education, should be economically self dependent and it is important for them to be protected.

    “We must confront those issues that tend to undermine women. Women are entitled to live decent lives and that is why the government of Governor Kayode Fayemi is displaying that political will to support us to defend the female gender against abuses.

    “In my own understanding of feminism, I can defend women who are being battered by their husbands, women who are well mannered, but I can’t defend those who are ill-mannered and rude. What I am fighting for is for them to achieve their full potentials.

    “I decided to be a feminist and defender of human rights because I was lucky to have married to someone who is a governor and has executive powers. We believe that we can use the political will and instrument of democracy to change our perspective about some things concerning women emancipation.”

    She urged ANA and those who perceive themselves as writers to encourage and mentor young people into writing, saying creative writing in most cases starts at tender ages through parents’ conscious efforts on children.

    “My father mentored me on how to be self confident even in the midst of men. I appeal to fathers to always show love to their daughters and encourage them to face arduous tasks with an inspirational word that they can do anything.”

    Ekiti Govt revokes 16 SUBEB contracts for breach of agreement –Chairman

    The Ekiti state Government, on Sunday, announced the immediate revocation of 16 contracts on renovation and construction projects, under its 2017 and 2015 UBEC /SUBEB Intervention Project, according to the Executive Chairman, State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB).

    In a statement in Ado Ekiti, issued by Mr Tope Babalola, Director of Social Mobilisation and Communications of the board, the chairman, Prof. Femi Akinwumi, explained that the contracts were terminated following a breach of contract terms.

    He noted that many of the revoked contracts had been dragging since March 2020, in contravention of the time frame of the contractual agreement which stipulated a maximum of 12 weeks for renovation works, under intervention projects in the state.

    Akinwumi also ordered the contractor handling renovation of a block of 6 classrooms at AUD Pilot Nursery and Primary school, Ado-Ekiti to immediately remove the substandard roofing materials used in the school.

    “The contractor was asked to replace them without delay, as specified in the terms of the agreement or also have the contract terminated,” he said.

    The SUBEB boss, who gave the directive after an on the spot assessment of ongoing projects in the state, said the board discovered that the contractor had used 0.45mm gauge roofing sheets instead of 0.55mm as specified in the UBEC/SUBEB agreement.

    Akinwumi noted that the board recently procured Vainer Slide Calipers for Technical Officers in the 16 Local Government Education Authorities of the state, as part of concerted efforts to enforce standards, as well as ensure that only appropriate roofing sheets were used in SUBEB projects in the state.

    Ekiti agency to begin dismantling illegal billboards on Thursday

    The Ekiti Signage and Advertisements Agency is to begin dismantling illegal billboards across the state on Thursday, April 15.

    Mr Olasunkanmi Onipede, the Director-General of the agency, disclosed this during a news conference in Ado Ekiti.

    ”The agency has given affected owners of the billboards adequate notice and warnings, to either regularise the placement of their billboards or remove them.

    ”Any billboard erected without approval or placed inappropriately, without regards to required guidelines from the agency, would be removed,” he said.

    The director-general also urged owners of billboards and signs operating legally but yet to regularise their permits, to do so without further delay, to avoid falling prey of government’s actions.

    Onipede warned private practitioners, politicians and other stakeholders not to erect billboards in restricted areas such as the Governor’s Office vicinity.

    He noted that other restricted areas included the Central Business District area adjourning the Chicken Republic to the Ojumose areas and under the Ado Ekiti overhead bridge.

    Ekiti state government, on Monday, said it had concluded plans to enter into partnership with a Brazilian organization, Africa –Brazil International Forum, in agribusiness, monorail and Bus Rapid Transit (BRT).

    Gov. Kayode Fayemi, who made this known when he met with officials of the organisation in his office in Ado-Ekiti, said that improving transportation and agriculture in Ekiti State were part of his administration’s plans.

    He said his government would gladly partner with the organization to actualise some of his laudable programmes, particularly in agriculture and transportation.

    The governor noted that Brazil had taken some giant strides in agriculture, having the most successful agricultural research organization in the world, and hence the interest of Ekiti to tap from their wealth of experience, particularly in the areas of research and technology.

    He revealed that Ekiti and Brazil had a lot in common, including climate and the types of crops available in the two zones.

    ” This is because everything I saw in Brazil, climate wise, soil wise was almost as if I was back in Ekiti.

    ” During my first term in office I spent some time in Brazil and I visited one of the most successful agricultural research organizations in the whole world, and we were able to learn a lot about what makes agriculture successful there.

    ” The successful crops are those that we have here, cocoa, tubers and grains. But Brazilians have done more to advance via technology, via research and there is a lot for us to learn from the experience of Brazil”, he said.

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Gov. Fayemi also urged more national and international business consortiums to come and invest in the state, saying that Ekiti was ready and open for business collaboration that would impact positively on the lives of the people.

    He said the state’s Investment and Development Promotion Agency would drive the partnership alongside the Ministry of Arts and Culture, in an effort to strengthen the bond of cooperation.

    Fayemi further said: “For us, this is the beginning of an exciting relationship on the practical side, in terms of agricultural cooperation but also on the cultural side
    ” For us, culture is very central to development and if we connect the two worlds, I know that we would make giant strides in our partnership”.

    Earlier, the General Secretary of the Forum, Lucas Andrade, revealed that his association had over one million farmers, with a team of over 25 investors, ready to work with the state government to bring more development to the state.

    Andrade, whose Yoruba name is Adeyemi Awurela, said the technical project was expected to bring a lot of food to the state through its agricultural programme, adding that the mobility system would help bring radical development to the state.

    The State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Prof Rasak Ojo Bakare, said the visit of the Brazilians was sequel to a trip by the Ministry’s top officials to Brazil last year.

    He explained that the trip had yielded positive results, not only for the tourism industry, but also for other areas of the state’s economy.

    Bakare revealed that over 25 investors had shown interests in coming to Ekiti to invest, in the different areas of the economy, under what he called the Brazil-Ekiti Project (BRAKIT).
