An Inspector of Police, Victor Okus, has allegedly shot two of his colleagues during an altercation in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, leaving one officer dead and another injured. The incident occurred on Sunday while the officers were on special duty in the state.
The Rivers State Police Public Relations Officer, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the incident and described it as tragic. She said one of the victims, Inspector Ibrahim Sani, died on the spot, while the second officer, Inspector Daniel Dauda, sustained gunshot injuries and is currently receiving medical treatment.
According to preliminary investigations, the incident happened at about 1:20 p.m. at Next Cash and Carry Supermart, Trans-Amadi, where the affected officers, attached to 14 Police Mobile Force (PMF), Yola, were on joint guard duty with military personnel. Inspector Okus, who is attached to 17 PMF and was on special assignment at Intels, Onne, allegedly shot the officers in the head and neck regions.
Both victims were rushed to Nopsam Hospital, where Inspector Sani was confirmed dead, while Inspector Dauda remains hospitalised. The body of the deceased has been deposited at the Military Hospital Mortuary in Port Harcourt for preservation and autopsy. The suspect has been arrested and is currently in police custody.
The Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, Olugbenga Adepoju, has ordered a full-scale investigation into the incident. He said the suspect will face an Orderly Room Trial and be charged to court, while also urging officers to handle firearms responsibly and professionally.
