UNILAG Student Drowns at Lagos Beach

A University of Lagos (UNILAG) student, Damilola Balogun, tragically drowned at Eleko Beach in Lagos while attempting a stunt with friends. Reports vary on the date of the incident, with some citing Friday, September 19, 2025, and the school confirming Thursday, September 18. Damilola, a Faculty of Education student and recently elected faculty president, had asked a friend to record him when a strong wave swept him away, preventing timely rescue.

His body was recovered the following morning at Museyo Beach, Ibeju-Lekki, about two kilometres from the scene. The UNILAG community expressed deep grief, with friends and colleagues paying tribute online. In a statement, the university’s Vice Chancellor, Prof. Folushade Ogunsola, extended condolences to the family, praying for strength and fortitude to bear the loss.
