UNILORIN commissions new hostel for Medical students
University of Ilorin Teaching Hospital
The University of Ilorin has commissioned a new 128-bed male hostel it built for students of its College of Health Sciences.
The facility is part of the efforts of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. AbdulGaniyuAmbali, towards providing decent accommodation for students on campus.
Each of the 64-room facility in a storey building has a kitchenette, toilet and bathroom. The facility is also equipped with Common Rooms as well as a reception hall. It is expected to accommodate about 128 students of the Faculties of Clinical Sciences and Basic Medical Sciences.
In separate interviews with Unilorin Bulletin last Tuesday (January 24, 2016), both the Provost, College of Medicine, Prof. W.B.R. Johnson, and the College Secretary, Dr S.B Adisa, expressed appreciation to the University administration for its efforts aimed at easing the challenges of accommodation facing the students.
Prof. Johnson, who further commended the Vice-Chancellor for the construction of the link road connecting the main campus with the UITH, said of the newly constructed hostel, “I think you need to go there and see that it is quite a vast upgrade of what we have at this end. It is a storey building. Aesthetically, it looks better, each room is self-contained. Self-contained because each room has its own mini-cooking stuff, of course, the bathing and toilet facilities are room specific. So, the new hostel is another addition to the feather-saturated cap of our Vice-Chancellor.”
The Provost also noted that “the link road is there for everybody to see now. It has actually shortened significantly, the gulf between us and the University. It is a much safer route to take than going through the Israelites’ journey.”
Prof. Johnson added that “the link road is just about 6.5Km, it takes you less than ten minutes as against one and half hour or so to move from here to the main campus. That is the greatest favour that you can do to some of us who have found ourselves in this kind of position that we have to liaise constantly between the College and the University”.
On his part, the College Secretary, Dr, Adisa, also appreciated the efforts of the management, saying, “The University has done well for the College. We urge them not to relent in helping us. Like Oliver Twist, we still need more hostels because this is just for male students, we still need hostels for female students.”
Disclosing that there were plans to also build places of worship for Christians and Muslims close to the halls of residence, DrAdisa lamented the hardship being faced by the students in terms of commuting between the UITH, the hostel and the main campus, adding that, the University can further assist in getting vehicle or tricycles to ply the area and ease the challenge of transportation.
The College Secretary, however, appealed to the University management to put in place measures to ensure adequate security for the occupants, calling for the deployment of mobile-policemen with firearms, as well as streetlights which, he stressed, “will go a long way in guaranteeing safety.”
Also speaking with Unilorin Bulletin on the new students’ hostel, the Students Union Welfare Secretary in charge of the College of Health Sciences, AremuAdemola, a 400L Medical student, said, “We really appreciate this. The University administration has done so much for us and we hope that things like this will continue to happen”.
